AI strategy works best when it starts with business judgement, not technology theatre.
Know the limits
Leaders should understand both the productivity potential and the need for review, governance, and clear usage standards. Generative systems can produce fluent output, but fluency is not the same as accuracy or business judgement.
This matters for executive teams because the quality of the surrounding process determines whether the tool supports better work or creates additional review burden.
Where it helps
Generative AI is often useful for drafting, summarising, comparing documents, exploring options, and supporting software or analytical workflows. It can make knowledge work faster when the user has enough context to evaluate the result.
It is less useful when teams expect a system to make accountable decisions without clear criteria, reliable data, and appropriate human oversight.
Set usage standards
A practical policy should explain what information can be used, which tools are approved, how outputs should be checked, and when specialist review is required. Simple standards are easier to apply than broad statements of principle.
Executives should also decide how usage will be monitored. The aim is to support responsible experimentation while preventing inconsistent practice across teams.
Consider data and vendors
Vendor selection should include security, privacy, contractual terms, data retention, model behaviour, and integration with existing systems. These questions are operational, not only technical.
A tool that works well for individual productivity may not be suitable for sensitive customer data, regulated workflows, or decisions that require auditability.
Keep the discussion grounded
The executive conversation should connect generative AI to concrete business priorities. Which workflows are slow or repetitive? Where does better analysis help? What review process is needed before output becomes action?
These questions keep adoption focused on practical value rather than broad claims about the technology.
